Local coffeeshop turns 75¢ paper into $1,000 of new business!”

Friday, April 24th, 2009

SAY WHAT?  Yes… this headline could be about YOU!

“Local coffeehouse owner turns 75¢ investment into $1,000.00 worth of new business!”

The newspaper business may not be great for the newspaper companies or its advertisers, but for smart business owners, the local paper holds a wealth of potential new customers.  For a yearly investment of $273.75 (that’s 75 cents for 365 editions) you can have up-to-date local leads and prospects delivered to your door in the form of the daily newspaper.  Everyday each freshly- printed edition provides the opportunity to reach out to a score of people and companies that more than likely are unaware of or who have passed by your business time and time again.

By setting aside time daily to peruse each page you will be able to develop a sizable listing of potential new customers to invite to  your business.  Creating a simple marketing campaign directed to these potential new customers will be well worth the time and effort spent the moment they come through your door.

You could quickly increase your traffic by acknowledging and inviting the individuals, couples or groups that have:

  • Announced an engagement
  • Celebrated an anniversary
  • Had a new baby
  • Recently purchased a new home
  • Received a promotion
  • Started a new business
  • Excelled with a personal or group achievement
  • Displayed a random act of kindness
  • Won an election
  • Had a positive and heart-warming story write-up

Creating a standard letter or invitation for each occassion or event will allow you to get your information into the mail on a daily basis.  Using a basic Excel spreadsheet will make tracking the invitations and measuring the effectiveness of this campaign relatively quick and easy.

The opportunity to increase traffic volume greatly depends on the number of individuals, couples, or groups that you have uncovered in the paper and invited to come visit your business.  The invitation can be small and personal in nature or can be taken to a much larger extreme.  A FREE breakfast, lunch, drink or dessert is just a few of the simple things that can be offered to honor, celebrate or congratulate them.  Take the time to personally introduce yourself and your staff and express appreciation for them stopping by.  Take this experience to the next level by creating the opportunity to snap a picture of the visit.  Make sure to post it on your website and on your in-house community board for all to see.  Remember to note who, what, when and why next to the picture.

Contact the local paper to make them aware of the event, occasion or celebration and you might just get some FREE press!  An example of this would be “Local Little League Champs Celebrate Victory with FREE Ice Cream from Joe’s Coffee & Cones”.   Not only will the kids love the praise for their accomplishment along with the ice cream, but be sure the parents, grandparents, friends, family and surrounding community will appreciate the fun and spirit the celebration brings to all.  In return for this small gesture of appreciation, your business will have the chance to gain a potential new stream of traffic and revenue and you and your staff will develop a true feeling of connection with the community.  All this from a 75 cents investment…

Colombian Coffee Price Increase

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Colombia has raised the price of Colombian Supremo by $.75 per pound of green at the port of entry.  This translates into a increased cost per pound of roasted coffee of $1.00.  This has all taken place in the last few weeks.  The crop was also short and demand from large companies has increased.

This puts significant pressure on the price of Colombian and the price of the coffee’s that include it.  Flavored coffee contains all Colombian Supremo;  many of the most popular Kaffe Magnum Opus blends, such as House Blend contain significant amounts.

Folgers has recently increased its price by 19% at retail.  So if you were selling at $10 per pound, the new price would be 12

We are working on options such as substituting other coffees – Mexicans, Peruvians and other milds are a possibility.

Our plan is to provide you with a choice: continue with Colombians at a somewhat higher price or move temporarily to a blend or a flavored coffee using a substitute.

Colombian Supremos are terrific balanced coffees.  Personally, my favorite blend is Special Blend and I consume 2 pots a day.  I plan to continue with the Colombians.

For flavored coffee, I’d consider moving slowly to the substitute.  That is, I’d mix the substitute with the flavored coffee, gradually moving the mixture to the new blend.  Kaffe Magnum Opus will make available both the existing blends and new ones with substitutes.

Perk It Up Before Pumpin' it Up

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Trying to be a healthy almost 50 something, I try my best to eat properly, get to bed at a decent hour, and  exercise several times a week.

But based on the April 6th article in the Colorado Daily Newspaper titled Research: Drink coffee before exercising I may be able to cut down on my trips to the gym. At best the old expression “No Pain, No Gain” may no longer apply if I exchange my water jug for a extra large cup of my favorite Joe.  I am wondering how running on the treadmill and drinking piping hot coffee is going to work out….

This article does provide a nice marketing opportunity.  Taking the time to scribe cleverly a promotional piece that can be used as a handout or bulletin board flyer.  Get out and do some leg work; introduce yourself to local gym owners and personal trainers and share this information with them.  Use it to promote the positive effects that coffee has for those who exercise or participate in weekend warrior activities.

Make sure that the promotional piece is well-branded, complete with pertinent contact information and directions.  ”Reduce Muscle Soreness Now, Come to Joe’s Jumpin’ Java Cafe for the Solution” or “NO Pain with Joe!” could be a headline for the flyer…

The main point is creating a ”call to action” that will entice the targeted gym audience to stop by the coffeehouse before or after their work-out.  The downside is that you may have to begin carrying some healthy snack alternatives, the upside is a new set of customers coming to your shop and bigger biceps from lifting all the new money out of the register at the end of the day.

The article sheds light on the reduction of pain associated with working out.  “Scientists at the University of Georgia reported as far back as 2003 that caffeine reduces muscle pain during exercise. Their study, involving muscle pain during cycling, found that riders reported substantially less pain after taking a caffeine pill rather than a placebo tablet.”

It goes on further to note the findings of “Robert Moti, a former competitive cyclist and now physical performance and health professor at the University of Illinois-Champaign.  He reports that caffeine indeed works on a nerve signal processing system in the brain and spinal cord linked to pain.”

“Moti started out studying possible links between caffeine intake, spinal reflexes and physical activity, but his most recent work looks at the effect of caffeine on muscle pain during high-intensity exercise.”  For the complete article “click here”.
